Hotstepper of the week

Amir Adnan

A lot of designers sell abroad. They are perpetually going off on exhibitions, doing shows, selling their wares and coming back. Therefore, Instep was delighted when we learned that Amir Adnan has opened shop at Sharjah Mega Mall. Alongside the H&Ms and the Zara's of the world, it is brilliant that there is a Pakistani brand selling to people in as international a city as Sharjah.

Amir Adnan has always been a pioneer in whatever he does. Back in the day when others were making exclusive clothing, Amir Adnan was famous for funky ties and pants and kurtas. He expanded his business and then started dividing it. With the launch of FnkAsia, which is helmed by his wife Huma, the house of Amir Adnan came full circle with a prêt line and a more exclusive line for men that is Amir Adnan.

It's a very smart decision to make. Pret is a growing market in Pakistan, while formal wear guarantees money with better profit margins. Instead of sacrificing one at the expense of another, Adnan set up a separate unit altogether, leaving Amir Adnan untouched. He will carry on doing the sherwanis that have become his signature, while FnkAsia will cater to the younger market.

FnkAsia is already a massive success in Pakistan and we are betting that it will sell well in Sharjah too. The Pakistani and Indian diaspora will ensure that. And as the house of Amir Adnan expands locally, it will result in more job creation and specialized training. FnkAsia has given a lot of fresh fashion graduates a chance to design and stock at a store. And that's reason enough for Instep to name Adnan as 'hotstepper' this week… not that he will ever stop hotstepping!
