WHO                      Shakila Hasan and Sanam Agha

WHERE Tariq Amin's 25th anniversary salon opening, Karachi

One word (okay two) that defines a woman's hair is 'crowning glory' and the first thing that comes to mind is an image of Dimple Kapadia in an Indian advertisement. That was almost two decades ago and the definition of how a woman's hair should look has changed drastically. Imagine Dimple with a curling iron or Meena Kumari with crimson highlights.

Unimaginable, no? Current hair trends have broken all limits of convention thankfully, and stylists encourage women to experiment with their looks and be adventurous. We cannot emphasize the need to avoid looking the same vis a vis straight blow dries! A couple of highlights and 'pieces' of colour put in your hair would help too. Looking for something drastic? Go all-white like the fashionable Shakila Hasan or chop off your tresses like Iraj and Jia Ali did. If you prefer to stay natural then take inspiration from Sanam Agha, who has a riot of curls, which she rarely attempts to tame.

To get your tresses in a twist...
Contemporary fashion designer Sadaf Malaterre is all about change when it comes to style and her own reflects that best. Not one to shy away from a little grey, Sadaf recently turned heads when she actually highlighted the grey piece in her fringe and wore it as an accessory.

Gia Ali, who was famous for her long black curls, had them shorn off in a moment of creative excitement. Some people hated her new look while others loved it; but no one could have ignored it. Head turner and nothing less.

The usually elegant and proper Katrina Kaif had a little funk put into her hair with these crimson highlights for her film New York. And notice that the straight hair was replaced by a natural albeit sexy wave.

Red doesn't always spell danger. In fashion we'd rather call it 'red alert' and that's exactly what fashion model Tatmain spells out as she models the new L'Oreal range for Nabila's campaign.

The bob has seen numerous variations but this one – created by Vidal Sassoon decades ago – is a classic endorsed by the most stylish women around the world. From Anna Wintour to Armani show models, this is the cut to have if you have razor straight hair and a fondness for drama.
