Awam workers stage demo against govt

KARACHI: The workers, journalists and general staff of Urdu evening newspaper Awam -- belonging to the Jang Group of Newspapers -- led by its Editor Nazir Leghari staged a big demonstration and marched through the Mai Kolachi Bypass Road, which culminated in a strong protest meeting in front of Javed Printing Press.

The demonstration was sequel to blockage of the carrier vehicles, by the local police, traffic police, and policemen in civies, when the vehicles were on way for distribution of paper from the press premises.

Editor Nazir Leghari, Desk In-charge Fazil Jameeli and Chief Reporter Khurshid Abbasi were among those who addressed the gathering. They reiterated their determination to thwart the government's aim to harass the newsmen and workers. The speakers said that journalists, students and the general public had struggled for a free press. Autocrats would never be successful in their design to curb the freedom of the press, they added.

The speakers said that they would fight the battle for the freedom for the press, under the leadership of Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman until they became successful in their struggle. The participants of the demonstration chanted slogans such as 'Gundaism against press freedom unacceptable', 'Nawaz Sharif unacceptable', 'State terrorism unacceptable', etc.
